Powering up St. Croix Organizations After Hurricanes Irma and Maria

Donations through Cane Bay Cares have powered up 36 in need organizations, schools and churches on St. Croix. This allowed us to reach as many people in the community as possible, and to address some of the most pressing issues impacting St. Croix residents after being hit by two Category 5 hurricanes – Irma and Maria. Chief among those issues is a loss of power island wide – with some 90% of the island still without power more than a month after the storms.

As a grassroots effort, we may not be able to power up the whole island, but we can help some organizations to power up so they can begin offering services again and providing assistance to the community at large. Already that is paying off as schools are reopening and distribution points are popping up at these locations.

The sentiment on the ground is truly inspiring. Every recipient has been so grateful to this effort and most have said they just can’t wait to begin serving again themselves. People are tired and ready to rebuild and get back to normal. We know that might take a while, but we will continue to do our part to get critical aid into the hands of those who need it most.

The first generator distribution included organizations like My Brothers Table, St. Croix Animal Shelter, Boys and Girls Club Christiansted, Boys and Girls Club Frederiksted, Women’s Coalition, Project Promise, Southgate Baptist Church, Speak the Word Ministries, Holy Cross Catholic Church/ School, Seventh Day Adventist School, Zion Academy and many others.
